Coast to Coast Ride

Fort Hancock to Van Horn

"honk if you love Jesus. Text while you drive if you're in a hurry to see Him." some wisdom from our diner.

We stopped at some convenience store yesterday. A pair of guys were unloading ice for the store. The younger one was quite excited about our ride. He vows to start riding himself. Who knows where this may lead him?

Yesterday's ride was assisted by a strong tailwind. We averaged over 20 mph for at least an hour! Today we dealt with headwinds. Thunderstorms are in the forecast; they bring a different weather pattern from the usual westerly winds . Tomorrow we ride south for Marfa. Hopefully the wond will be no worse than a crosswind.

We stopped for lunch at Curley's barbeque in Sierra Blanca. Everything else was closed and abandoned. The owner said she's closing Curley's at the end of the month.

Other cyclists we meet have been mentioning "the walking man". Michele spotted him today resting at a rest area on I-10. We visited with Brian. Brian is a young Vietnamese-American. His father died recently. Brian is walking coast to coast to celebrate his father's life. He's two months into the trip; he estimates six months to go. He pushes a kind of shopping cart with his gear.

We are staying with WarmShowers host Bethany and Gary. Bethany prepared a great pasta and salad dinner. Gary works on rockets for Jeff Bezos' space company.

HI Jerry & Michele,

Finally remembered the blog link - whopee! Very much enjoying catching up on your posts, past and present...thanks for doing them. The photos are great too...sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words but in your case I think the visual & written parts of the diary complement each other. I was esp. fascinated by the horse-riding pair...an unusual adventure!

Looking forward to reading further of the travels of Jerry & Co!!!

Hi Intrepid Wanderers!

I see you visited Sierra Banca! When I traveled between Texas and California as a college student in the early 70s, my mom always insisted I spend the night at the teeny tiny White Cloud Motel in Sierra Blanca. She met the lady who owned it at one time and was sure I would be safe if I slept there for the night. :) What can I say. I was 19, traveling alone, and Mom was a little freaked out about it. :)

I also see you have visited the Lovely City of Van Horn. In the mid 1970s, land was being advertised for sale on TV in "Bee-u-tee-full Van Horn." Les was intrigued. We drove out there finally to see the sights. Not so "Bee-u-tee-full" after all. :)
